Will dual enrollment affect my eligibility?

I am in 11th grade and i'm taking dual enrollment and accelerated high school classes at my local jr. college. I have completed 2 classes (6 hours). Will this affect my eligibility if I get an athletic scholarship? How many college hours/classes can I take in high school before I loose any eligibility? #dualenrollment #eligibilty #collegesports

Hi Christian,

From a a financial standpoint, taking college level courses while in high school can safe you money and give you college credits before you begin your college education. Once you get accepted to a school you will also need to submit a transcript of the college courses you have taken, so that they can be transferred. A transfer credit evaluator at the college will evaluate the courses and determine what the courses will transfer as. Before you register for classes, make sure which classes transferred and what they transferred as, so that you do not register for a courses you have already taken.

My friend's daughter currently is playing sports at a Division 1 school and she will need to go to school year round to finish her degree. She takes classes in the summer, so that she'll be able to take less classes during the regular semesters, especially when her sport is in season.

Depending on on the school that you end up attending, they have programs that helps with your academics which may include advisement and mandatory study hours/tutoring specifically for student athletes. Additionally, some schools limit the number of credits that can be transferred in. you would need to check with the school, so see how many it is.

Jacqueline recommends the following next steps:

Submit transcripts for college courses taken while in high school to the Admissions Office after you've decided what school you will be attending.
Contact your college to see how many college credits you will receive and what the classes have transferred as.
Make sure that when you are registering for classes that you have not registered for a course that you already transferred in. Since most schools will not give you duplicate credit hours for the same class.
Talk to the athletic department about the number of years of your NCAA elibility because depending on your program and how many credits you transfer in, you may be eligible to get at least part of a graduate degree paid for. That's if you able to do your undergrad degree in 3 to 3.5 years.
