As someone with a degree in exercise science, what are some career options available if I decide not to further my education in the form of professional school?

Exercise science is a super intriguing degree, but often individuals are confused on what career options are out there. For instance, many people decide to further education by PT school, but what if I want to work right away?

Hello, Harper !

Congratulations on obtaining a great degree in Exercise Science ! Do you have your Associates or Bachelors in it ?

My advice is to return to the college you attended and visit their career center. Many students have asked us about career options even when they have already gone through the years at college to prepare for it. You can re-visit your Exercise Science Department to discuss what is available in this field where you live. Visit the Career Center on campus, too. They should have information for you.

Since your degree path and college experience didn't familiarize you with what your options are, I would advise starting out with a job at a health club or a gym. You can do that while figuring out what you want to do. It's not a matter of picking out a career from a list of jobs, rather being prepared to, be able to and want to do something specific. You can also consider applying for a job through your town's Parks and Recreation Department while you explore possible options that would suit you. Maybe this just isn't the time for you to decide just yet and that is perfectly okay. Give it some time and you will surely be inspired and drawn to something that you will find very satisfying.

If you have your Associates, you may want to consider going for your Bachelors. If you have your Bachelors, consider going for a Masters Degree or instead taking certification trainings to be certified in areas of exercise science. No one can really tell you which area to go into, but you should begin working right now somewhere so you can have some earnings while you make some decisions.

Best wishes in all you do !

Hi Harper,

With a degree in exercise science, you have a lot of career options, even if you don't go to professional school right away. You could be a personal trainer, strength and conditioning coach, wellness coach, exercise physiologist, fitness instructor, rehab specialist, health promotion specialist, sports coach, sales rep for fitness products, or sports facility manager. For example, you can work with athletes to improve their performance. Many sports leagues in the US, such as the NBA or NFL, hire strength and conditioning coaches to support their athletes. Each job lets you use your exercise science knowledge, and you can get extra certifications to boost your qualifications and job prospects. Hope this helps!
