Gil’s Answer

Hi Hugo. Aviation maintenance is an excellent career choice. And the best part is that you are starting young. Your learning is going to be continuous, though, so be ready for that.

The schooling for becoming an aircraft maintenance technician is vital because you will learn the importance of tool selection and appropriate tool use.

Your learning, however does not need to stop with obtaining your FAA certificate (really, they’re certificates, not licenses). Keep the learning going and get your degree. And do your best to attend a community college. Don’t focus on the speed of obtaining your certificate. Focus rather on reaching your goal in the best way possible, with the best path to future academic achievement.

Gil recommends the following next steps:

Find a community college that teaches aircraft maintenance.
Find a shop where you can apprentice.
Begin immersing yourself in the industry through magazines and trade publications.
Before you reach 18, do a Young Eagles ride at your local airport.

Hey Hugo,

Great question. I think that it really depends on what you define as success. For some success might be defined by money, there's a lot of evidence out there that on average the more educated people are, the more money they tend to earn. and that number continues to increase as you get into higher levels of degrees. If we are talking job satisfaction I think a career is more flexible than a job. a job in my opinion is a need to complete a predetermined set of tasks. it's task driven and may not change day to day and year over year. some may like that, others may not. When I think of a career it's more long term and centric to the individual, what tasks do they WANT to do. It might require some new learning, skills, etc. A career will often be filled with a variety of different jobs which provides some much needed change for people.

Jaime’s Answer

Education plays a crucial role in success because it provides the knowledge, skills, and opportunities needed to grow both personally and professionally. While a job can offer immediate income, a career gives long-term stability, growth, and fulfillment. Having a career means building expertise in a field you enjoy, opening doors to better opportunities and financial security.

If you're considering becoming an aviation mechanic, you're looking at a field with strong demand, good salaries, and hands-on work that keeps the aviation industry running. It’s great that you want to enjoy what you do while making a decent living—that balance is key to long-term satisfaction. My advice is to research training programs, talk to professionals in the field, and consider job growth and potential earnings. Choosing a career you’re passionate about will make all the difference in your success and happiness.

Hello Hugo. In my point of view is really important for you looking for a wide variety of options, as an aircraft mechanic I could say it is a challenging career, each single day is a new challenge, but when you are a junior mechanic you must be constantly learning, first years of any job couldn't get a lot of money, if you are dedicated, and you like read a lot of technical manuals, you will be a great mechanic as well.

It is my career for over 25 year and I've been so happy and learning everyday.
