How will my emotional intelligence help me navigate the challenges of law school and a legal career and what are things I need to know?

I’m a girl who aspires to become a lawyer but I often question if I’m emotionally capable of going on a legal journey as well as I am educationally competent.

Hi Hadey,

I completely agree with Dennis' answer. Ultimately, only you can decide, but while this career can be stressful, choosing the right area of law can help reduce stress and anxiety. For example, if you're shy and don't like public speaking, you might want to avoid criminal law or litigation. Instead, you could focus on areas like probate or contracts, which don't require much courtroom arguing. It's important to be aware of your feelings and not ignore your body's signals. I meditate every day, but others might prefer walking or yoga. I'm sure you'll find your balance, and as Dennis mentioned, just asking this question shows you'll do well and succeed in this field. Wishing you all the best on your journey! :D

I really like your question - To begin, my initial reaction is to highlight we are all people to begin with. Keeping that in mind is essential to always have that base as your primary start. Only after you assured yourself of this significant fact the rest follows. Then, all of your educational background and field experience complement each other to offer your clients a comprehensive treatment for their situations.

*Note: I try to always have present the fact we are all human. Yes - all of our situations, background, and current context is different. Yet, there is a very powerful idea about being so different yet so primally alike that connect us all in different ways. Hope this makes sense and is useful in your future endeavors.

DENNIS’s Answer

Hadey: I am not going to lie to you - law can be very stressful. However, always remember - lawyers are like firemen - people only need them when they're really in trouble. Your emotional intelligence can be an asset. Having empathy for clients is half the battle. As I have told young lawyers over the years - remember a client hires you for your heart as well as your brain. So, are you "emotionaly capable"? I'd suggest yes.
Are there going to be days crying after losing a case - yes. Are there going to be times you ask yourself - "what have I gotten myself into?" Yes. Are there times you are going to hate being a lawyer - yes. However, in the end it is well worth it. You'll have helped ennumerable people and you will realize that what you did mattered. So go for it. Just asking this question tells me you have what it takes! Good luck.
