Gunay’s Answer

A compact license refers to a system that allows healthcare professionals (like dentists, nurses, doctors, respiratory therapists, etc.) to practice across state lines without needing to apply for a separate license in each state. While there are some compact licenses in place in certain fields, it has yet to become fully universal for all healthcare professions.

Current Developments:

Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC): The Nurse Licensure Compact is one of the most successful examples of a compact license in the U.S. It allows nurses licensed in one compact member state to practice in any other compact state without needing additional licenses. As of now, the NLC includes over 30 states.

Interstate Medical Licensure Compact (IMLC): For physicians, there is the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact, which allows doctors to obtain a license to practice in multiple states with one application, though it's still not as widespread as the NLC.

Potential for Expansion: Some states and professions are exploring the idea of expanding compact licensing to other healthcare fields, including dental care, physical therapy, and respiratory therapy. For example:

The Dental Licensure Compact has been proposed and is under discussion, but it's not yet fully implemented.

Similar compact agreements may develop for other healthcare sectors, including respiratory care and pharmacy.
