Many physicians become general pediatricians and care for children from birth through adolescence.
Others will do an additional 3 years in a pediatric subspecialty, in which one deepens their knowledge of a particular area of pediatric care.
If you have an intense interest in becoming a pediatric physician, I would advise taking it a step at a time. Once in medical school you may find your interests develop in other areas of medicine, or that your interests in pediatrics narrows to one particular subspecialty. View it as an adventure and enjoy the process of learning and of learning where you are best suited to serve.

Pediatrics is a specialty but there are also subspecialties that provide more specific medical care. For example, pediatric cardiology would address cardiac related conditions in children. Healthcare professionals typically complete additional training or fellowships in their chosen subspecialty.
