Dan’s Answer

First, think about which part of the industry interests you the most—whether it's research, regulatory work, medical information, sales, or business development. Once you know that, visit the websites of companies in that field to find job postings. You can also contact their Human Resources Department to ask about internship opportunities, as many companies offer these.

It's important to consider your own interests and skills. Also, look at where companies are located and what areas they focus on, so you can choose what's best for you.

Dan recommends the following next steps:

Evaluate your persona interests
Look into different roles within a Pharma company
Look into disease states and what you might want to study / treat
contact HR departments and inquire about intern opportunities

Jaime’s Answer

In addition to the advice already given, I would also recommend not limiting yourself to the big pharma companies. There are many, many, smaller biotech companies that post several internship opportunities and since their teams are smaller, it may lend for opportunity to get exposure to multiple departments/functions within the organization to understand what they do and what interests you. Search them out and get on their websites as internships are not always posted on the bigger sites like LinkedIn. Some are, so still monitor them, but they do tend to get more applicants on the bigger sites which also tend to use bots to weed out applicants using key word searches, etc. Location is a consideration as well, and it is definitely a competitive environment. Make sure that your resume, etc. highlight extracurriculars and volunteer work and any examples or experiences you have that demonstrate going above and beyond, for example.

Use LinkedIn to find an internship. Consult with the career office at your university too.

Parixit’s Answer

The best way to gain experience is through an internship, clerkship rotation, or residency. You can do an internship over the summer or a rotation during your final year in the industry. Residency is another choice, but it is usually extremely competitive.

Parixit’s Answer

It's a tough competition because there aren't many spots open. But don't worry! Focus on sharpening your interview skills, highlighting your past experiences, and showcasing your extracurricular activities. Getting a recommendation letter from your professor could also significantly boost you!
