Hello! Delivering babies is one of the most beautiful parts of our job. I think the most important thing at the moment is communication with your patient. Some women are already mothers and others are having their first baby. It's always good to know what you're going to undergo, how, and what will happen next. I say this as a mother of two beautiful children and a gynecology nurse.

Hi Tamara, I have delivered babies for over 20 years and the most important way to make a mother feel safe, as Nurse Hernandez mentioned, is to always communicate to the her what is going on with her and baby during labor, delivery and the postpartum stay. The patient has to feel that she and the baby are the most important persons for the medical staff to care for at that moment. This is the most special event in the life of the parent(s). If everything goes well with the delivery, I've often just put baby on mother's chest so she and baby can bond. After the umbilical cord is cut. The nurse will cover the baby with a blanket and give them that time. Then help mother begin breastfeeding. Partners need to also be involved.

However, if baby has to be taken to the nursery of NICU immediately, always let the mothers and partners know what is going on. The pediatrician and/or neonatologist must also be involved in the communication. It is most important that mother is assured that she and baby are being well cared for throughout their entire stay in the hospital by the entire medical staff providing warm and caring and with confidence that the best is being done for her and the baby(ies).
