Albert’s Answer

Good grades, good MCAT schools, volunteer work and a well-rounded personality, that's pretty obvious and not much help to you. Medical schools may have other criteria for filling their freshman class such as diversity, so maybe you should see what types of students the schools have admitted in the past.

James’s Answer

Dr. Giannone has hit on the most important aspects that medical schools look for. It is good to stand out by being passionate about something that affects people's well-being. Volunteering that supports getting people the healthcare, housing, nutrition, physical activity... they need is good. It is helpful to speak more than one language well. Sometimes a school is considering the different specialties students identify as their likely target so they have diversity of interests (primary care, pediatrics, surgery, pathology, hospital medicine...). Most are looking for leaders. If you can become a team captain, a class officer, or other leadership opportunity, that would be great. Consider becoming an EMT, medical assistant, research assistant... These demonstrate that you have some experience with healthcare, while also giving you a chance to make some money to help defray the high costs of getting a medical degree.
Make sure your personal statement is not some AI-generated thing (although you can use AI to help you). Make it sound very personal and real, and tell a good story that makes others want to have you in their program. What about you stands out? Give examples of life events that have made you sure you want to be a physician. How could they know you would truly care about the patients that come to their hospital(s)? Describe how you will make a positive difference for patients and communities once you have graduated.
Medical schools and those who read admissions packets are often academics, so if you can be involved in scholarly activity and especially if you can add your name to a research publication, that is wonderful.
Best of luck!
