How did you go about finding scholarships to cover all of your school costs?

The university I'm attending doesn't have very many scholarships to help me cover the costs, but I need a lot of money to pay for it. I'd like to avoid loans if possible, so do you know of any way to get the money through scholarships?

Hi Jackson:

There are scholarships based on need, academic performance, school activities, sports involvement, community service, etc. So, it will be to your advantage to seek out these types of scholarships. All of the academic staff at your college that you interact with can write letters of recommendations for you based on what was just stated above. These recommendations can greatly help when filling out scholarship applications. It is best to ask your College Academic Advisor on the timeline process as well. College scholarship applications will have specific deadlines and requirements to meet in order to be submitted for review and consideration.

You may want to start to compile your resume/portfolio since a majority of scholarship applications will require academic grade point average (GPA), academic accomplishments, school activities (clubs, sports, etc.), community involvement (volunteer, church, etc.), academic and personal recommendations, etc. There may be essay requirements on why you are a qualified candidate to receive the scholarship, what your future goals are academically and professionally and other questions centering around who you are, your beliefs, etc.

Here are a couple of links for College Scholarships:

You can check with the School/Department of your desired major, the Campus Career Center and the Register's Office for additional information for college scholarships and grants and specific requirements for qualifications. The staff can advise you and point you in the right direction regardless what your current level of education is.

There should be no limit on the amount of scholarships that one can apply to. It will take time to fill out the scholarship applications and provide all of the necessary required information. Also, there should no fee and no cost to fill out and submit scholarship applications. If there is a fee or cost that is associated with a scholarship application, then please do not send this particular scholarship application in. It will be a scam and money will be lost.

Best wishes for your education and good luck on the scholarships!

Hello Jackson, thank you for reaching out to us! You’ve asked a fantastic question, and I’m excited to share some insights from my time as a counselor. There are many opportunities for scholarships that you can explore. Check with the Dean's Office, your counseling and guidance office, or the career and employment placement office at your school. The alumni office often offers scholarships to deserving students, too.

Sometimes, local politicians, like those in the Mayor's Office, have scholarship programs for their communities. In my experience, fields like Engineering, Sciences, and Education often have scholarships available, especially for programs with fewer students. If you're in an Engineering Program, connect with your department and look for universities offering scholarships in your field.

Top companies also offer scholarships to students who might become future employees, so it's worth exploring those options. Don’t forget to contact your Department of Education for financial aid information and follow their guidelines carefully.

If you have the qualities of a scholar, go for it! Remember, applying for scholarships can be a numbers game, so apply to as many as you can to increase your chances. Start now, seek the right people to guide you, and you’ll do great. Good luck, and don’t be afraid to take risks!
