What is the best way to know if a school is right for you?

I am currently attending a notoriously great school for my major, but I don't know if it is the right fit for me.

Great question—finding the right college fit isn’t just about rankings or prestige. It’s about alignment with your goals, values, and learning style. Here’s some advice I have given to others:

1. Define What Matters to You
Ask yourself:
- Academic fit: Does it offer the major or programs you’re interested in?
- Campus culture: Do you want a competitive or collaborative vibe? Big school spirit or a tight-knit community?
- Location: City or rural? Close to home or far? Weather preferences?
- Cost & financial aid: Can you afford it or will they help you out?
- Career support: Do they have good internship pipelines, alumni networks, or job placement rates?

2. Visit (or Take Virtual Tours)
- Walk the campus if possible. Eat in the dining hall, sit in on a class, talk to students.
- If you can’t go in person, many schools have great virtual experiences now.
- Ask students about what surprised them (good or bad) once they got there.

3. Talk to Current Students or Alumni
- DM students on social media, join admitted student groups, or talk to alumni through your high school or the college’s career office.
- Ask what they love and what they wish they could change.

4. Evaluate Academic Rigor and Support
- Look at class sizes, professor accessibility, tutoring centers, and freshman support programs.
- Ask: Will I be challenged—and supported—here?

5. Consider Your Gut Feeling
- How did you feel after visiting or researching the school? Excited? Overwhelmed? Indifferent?
- Sometimes your instinct is more accurate than the stats.

6. Do a Side-by-Side Comparison
Make a simple chart with:
- Pros and cons
- Cost
- Academic offerings
- Vibe/culture
- Outcomes (like job or grad school placement)

I hope this helps and good luck!

There isn't one "best" way to find the right school for you, but visiting schools that interest you can help. Check the graduation rate and see if graduates work in fields you're interested in, as these connections can be valuable. Read both positive and negative reviews to spot any patterns. If possible, talk to current or former students to learn about their experiences. Choose a school that ranks high in the field you want to pursue.
