Great question! I also studied accounting and have been at a Big 4 Firm for more than 20 years. These firms attract some of the best and brightest graduates. For me, it's been incredibly rewarding to work with talented peers, learn from them, and push each other to achieve our goals.
It's a very team-focused job and gives you a chance to gain deep industry knowledge for the clients you help. When I finished college, I planned to use this experience to eventually move into a role within the industry. However, the exciting environment, constant changes, and growth opportunities at such a large firm have kept me in public accounting for over 20 years, making it a truly fulfilling career.

You can get great experience and exposure to many different areas within accounting by working for a large firm, like the Big 4. Personally, I started off doing tax compliance at a Big 4, then migrated into specializing in International Tax in industry and have ended up working in tax technology. The opportunities are truly endless!

Public accounting has upsides and downsides like any job. It is very focused on goals and deadlines. You have many experienced colleagues ready to help. During busy times, the hours can be long, but they are usually flexible when things are less hectic. There is a clear path for promotion, so you know what you're aiming for.

Ahlayah, it's fantastic that you're thinking about a career in accounting. I've worked in public accounting for over 30 years, and one thing I've noticed is that there are always changes and new opportunities.
We work in teams to help clients, and you can move up quickly. Even after just a few years out of college, you might be leading a project for one of our clients. You could be involved in big transactions you read about in the news or help clients with major business changes. These experiences are unique and rewarding, and you don't have to switch jobs to enjoy them.

Working at a Big 4 firm offers many benefits. You usually start with a group of new hires, which helps you make friends at work. This makes it easier to move from college to a job. In your first few years, you'll get to try different tasks to see what you enjoy and if you want to focus on a specific industry. You'll work in teams of different sizes, where team members will train and guide you. Later, you'll be the one helping and training others. The workplace is very collaborative and can be quite enjoyable.

You'll gain insights into various business operations, which strengthens your knowledge of real-world finance and operations. While the hours can be long, especially during the busy season, the support of a great team makes it manageable. It's a dynamic environment where you learn a lot as you go.
