What is the best way to start a career in makeup?

I'm 19 and I am currently working as a bartender at the same restaurant I've been working at since I was 15. I graduated from high school and went to college, but dropped out after about 6 months. I've found myself having no passion or desire for anything worthy of making a career out of. I've recently been thinking about working my way up to becoming a makeup artist. I've always really enjoyed doing unique and outgoing eyeshadow looks. I've never really done makeup on anyone but myself, and I'm only experienced with eyeshadow. I want to save up and take a makeup course online eventually. But where do I start with experimenting with makeup on my own? What are good products or techniques to use? Are there any influencers or YouTubers I should watch?

I don’t know much about this artistic field, but I believe the best way to learn is through YouTube, free courses, and by practicing at home with family, friends, or even by yourself. Nowadays, you can learn anything you want on the internet. In addition to makeup, study a bit about marketing, business, color palettes, photography, lighting, shadows—everything related to the creative and design field. This will greatly strengthen your knowledge of makeup, help you understand which colors to use and how to combine them, and also how to showcase your work on social media, where your photos need to look perfect. Never stop dreaming!!

Hello, Greta !

In order to become a professional makeup artist, you may be disappointed by my advice (I hope not), but the only way to do this is to go to Aesthetician School. It's a lot more than just putting makeup on. You'll have to have credentials and credibility to be in the competitive market for work when you finish aesthetician school. Never do any education online for a career in which you do hands on work on people's bodies. This is going to have to be done on site, in person as it is a very heavy-people-oriented field of work. The internet will not teach you effectively for this career. In person networking, receiving spontaneous feedback on your work and being guided by professionals who get to know you as a person is crucial for this career.

You may not want to attend Aesthetician School or get the necessary training, licensing and credentials for this career. Now is a time that you can think about the changes you will need to make if you really, really want to become a professional in this field. Talk things out with the previous college you've attended, the Career Center or an Academic Counselor because something is holding you back and you need to work on the root cause. Once you can iron out your feelings and barriers, you may find yourself taking the effective path for your career interest.

I advise taking some orientations at some Aesthetician Schools to motivate and inspire you. You can register for orientations at the Fond du Lac Skin Spa & School of Esthetics, or MATC Mequon in Mequon, WI. But it's okay to take more time to decide about a career, especially that you are already working full time.

Try not to worry about not having experience applying makeup and facials to other people. As a theatre major in college, I had to take Stage Makeup and had practicums doing makeup for some plays. You just do it, but aesthetician school will be vital in teaching you the details of how to apply makeup on someone. If you get a chance to visit the Merle Norman & MN Salon located in Brookfield, the owner may let you sit in on makeup applications they do. It may be fun to observe that.

I hope these are bits of advice you'll think about because you should have the career you want. Overcome anything that holds you back and you'll have a beautiful beginning towards your long term career goal !
