Kent’s Answer

You’re asking a very smart question — and honestly, you’re way ahead of a lot of people just by thinking about it this way.

Here’s the truth:

The most important factor in finding the right internship is whether it helps you build real experience toward the career you want — not just whether it sounds cool or prestigious.
A quick reality check:
• No internship is perfect.
(Don’t stress trying to find “the one magical opportunity.”)
• Focus on internships that stretch you a little — even if they aren’t glamorous.
• It’s better to have an internship that teaches you something and lets you contribute meaningfully, than to have a big-name internship where you don’t really grow.

Pick the internship that gives you real experience, new skills, and growth opportunities — not just the most famous name or biggest paycheck.

Kent recommends the following next steps:

1. Will this internship let me practice skills I want to use after graduation? • Example: If you want to work in international business, an internship helping a company expand to a new market (even if it’s a small company) is way better than an internship at a big company doing only data entry.
2. Will it give me experiences I can talk about in future job interviews? • You want real projects, real responsibility — things that prove you can solve problems, manage tasks, work with teams, and contribute.
3. Does it move me closer to the kinds of jobs I want later? • Even if it’s not perfect, a good internship should be a stepping stone toward your career interests.
4. Is there someone I can learn from? • A great internship isn’t just about the brand name — it’s about whether your manager or mentor will help you grow, explain things, and guide you.
5. Can I build relationships (network) during the internship? • You want an environment where you can meet professionals, ask questions, and build connections — because networking is huge for getting your first real job.

Hi Gabriel, Kent's answers are ideal to help you consider the many factors regarding internships. I would add the following to the list :
Does your major require a set amount of internship hours? Will you attend school (either on-line or ground) during your internship?

Today most schools have paid internships or stipends to help with offsite living expenses Also, your career counseling/ internship office should be able to refer you to previous internship students to learn about their experience. For many, a successful, meaningful internship lead to another one with more responsibility and a job offer at graduation ! And if you find out that you don't want to work for that company/organization/ or job again- then you are closer to finding out a new path thru networking!

Good Luck

Great question! Don't worry about finding the perfect internship. Look for listings that match your degree and career goals, and apply to as many as possible. The more interviews you attend, the better you'll get at them, which is fantastic! If you get a couple of offers, that's amazing! But even if you only get one and it's not your dream job, don't stress. Internships are short-term and any relevant experience will look impressive on your resume for the future. Remember, internships are a chance to get your foot in the door. They are like extended interviews for you and the company to see if you're a good match. If it doesn't work out, you've still added to your resume, helping you in your next search. If it does work out, you're one step closer to your dream job!
