What is the best course of you aren’t enjoying the courses for a major you have wanted since you were young ?

What should I do if I’m struggling in my college courses, but they are essential for the profession I want to enter? Should I consider changing my major, or are there other strategies I can explore to improve my experience? #Spring25

Hey Katherine,

You've got this! If this is something you're passionate about, there are plenty of resources to support you through any challenges. Your college offers many options, and joining a study group could be a great way to discuss material with peers and grasp it better. Discovering the resources that suit you best will benefit you in any field. Reaching out to your professor or academic adviser is a smart first step. Remember, one tough course doesn't determine your entire experience in that field. Keep pushing forward!

Hi Katherine,

I am sorry that you are not enjoying your studies. Since you didn't give any indication what your major is and what you struggle with it's impossible to know what to do about it.

You said you wanted this major since you were a kid. Did you properly research what the major entails? Is it just more difficult than you thought it would be or is it just not interesting at all? Are there any courses you enjoy?

If you don't like anything it's probably best to find something else. If it's just certain courses you don't enjoy or that you find difficult, it might be just a matter of getting through them because you want to go into a different specialty anyway.

For example, if you are studying chemistry and you don't like organic, just get through the required courses and you will never have to see organic again. If you don't like organic or inorganic or physical chemistry, it's better to switch.

I would recommend that you talk to your academic advisor about your difficulties. They can help you to re-direct your studies. Take some time to calm down and contemplate what you are interested in, what attracted you to this major in the first place and why it didn't work out.

If you are still on campus, take the time to peek into some other lectures. Talk to other students about their majors. Investigate the curricula for other majors and find out what careers they lead to.

I hope this helps! All the best to you!
