Hi, Jennifer !

Yes. There is a way to obtain employment even when people go through rough times similar to yours'. Since you are asking in general and mention that you're experiencing food insecurity, you can go to the social service offices in Independence for immediate assistance. I assume you are not on this assistance already because these services usually have an employment assistance component. I don't usually suggest this, however, it sounds as though you need the quickest way to start getting back up on your feet and in these situations, time is of the essence.

Visit The Independence Resource Center at which you can apply for food assistance, temporary cash assistance, and medical assistance. The Missouri Department of Social Services' Family Support Division assists with various benefits and services. Ask them about employment services. Also visit The Social Services Department in Independence, Missouri as this community based organization provides counseling, resources, and advocacy. You need to meet with a representative in person and have your specific needs assessed. This all will be the quickest way and a bridge before becoming employed.

Once you have done that, call the Division of Employment Security at 573-751-1995 as they can help you best with employment. Contact the following employment agencies for job placement: Employee Staffing Group, Creative Circle, Full Employment Council, Labor Ready, and Crown Services.

It is very important that you mention what your skills are when inquiring about employment. Random lists of various jobs are not going to help you unless you know how to do the work. Make a list of the various things that you can do and figure out for yourself what type of jobs to apply for. Also, if you have been lacking motivation and drive, talk it out with one of the case managers at a social service agency or a faith based venue. Your situation isn't random nor should it be advised by assumptions, so when you are ready, I advise that you contact the resources I have suggested and hopefully things will change for you the quickest way possible. Thanks for reaching out to us here at Career Village and wish you all the best for you and your family !

Hi Jennifer,

First, I want to say thank you for sharing what you’re going through—it takes strength to reach out, and you’re doing the right thing by looking for options. There are ways to make some extra money starting today, and I’m here to help guide you through a few real, practical ideas.

💻 1. Online Microtasks or Freelance Work (Can Start Today)
These won’t make a full-time income right away, but they can help right now:

TaskRabbit (small jobs in your local area, like cleaning or delivery)

Upwork / Fiverr (freelance writing, data entry, virtual assistant work)

Rev (get paid to transcribe short audio files—you just need internet and a computer)

Respondent.io or User Interviews (paid surveys and research studies, sometimes $20–$100 per study)

🛍️ 2. Sell Unused Items
Look around for things you no longer need—clothes, electronics, toys—and post them on:

Facebook Marketplace (local buyers = quick cash)

OfferUp or Mercari (for broader reach)

Ask local “Buy Nothing” or mutual aid groups if someone can help you list things

🧹 3. Offer Services in Your Neighborhood
People often need:

House cleaning

Babysitting

Dog walking

Laundry help
Print out or write a small flyer and put it up at your local church, library, or grocery store bulletin board.

🍱 4. Local Food Pantries & Assistance
If feeding your children is urgent right now, please don’t hesitate to reach out to:

Harvesters Food Bank (Kansas City area): Call 816-929-3000 or visit harvesters.org

211 Missouri (United Way): Dial 211 to find food, shelter, and emergency support

Community Action Agencies in Independence, MO—they can help with rent, food, and job programs

💬 You Are Not Alone
You’re doing everything right by asking for help. Even small steps can lead to big changes over time. If you have access to a phone or computer, I can help walk you through setting up an online profile to start earning.

Let me know what you’re comfortable with or have experience in—I’d be honored to help you find something that fits.

You've got this, Jennifer. One step at a time. 💛
