Hello Kelly,
Even natural talent needs training. Great singers:
Practice vocal warm-ups daily. Learn breath control, range, and pitch through lessons. Study vocal styles (pop, R&B, Afrobeat, etc.).
Consider taking online or in-person vocal lessons. YouTube has free coaches, but platforms like Singeo, Skillshare, or TakeLessons offer more structured training.
Every great singer has a unique sound, look, and story. Start by:
Covering songs you love in your style. Recording short videos for TikTok, Instagram, or YouTube. Asking friends/family for honest feedback.
To become a professional, you need to feel comfortable performing. Try:
Singing at school events, open mics, churches, or cafes. Recording basic demos with free software like Audacity or BandLab. Joining music contests (local or online) to get feedback and exposure.
To make singing your career, learn how the industry works:
What is a manager? A label? A streaming royalty? How do artists promote music online?
Follow music business YouTube channels or take a free course on Coursera like “Introduction to Music Business” by Berklee.

Hope this information was helpfull, Good luck!

Vero.

Hello, Kelly !

To prepare yourself for a future career as a Singer, you should participate in all of the singing classes at your school and audition for any plays, musicals and shows that your school does. Also see if there are any video production clubs and think about making original music videos while in high school. If these things do not exist at your current school, create a group in or outside of school.

Consider attending University and going through a Music Program with an emphasis on singing/performance. Getting a college degree may help for future music connected jobs, but this is where you'll get experience performing before an audience and learn a lot about the business in your country of South Africa. Most importantly - do not keep this a "dream", make it happen.

Make sure that you are open to learning different genres. In college, try to take a singing course that is based in classical singing (the kind I took when I was in college). You will learn and sing songs you never dreamed you'd sing. This will stretch your range and lay a great foundation for popular, jazz, rock, and musical theatre. If you learn many genres, you will enhance your range and ability to mix genres like Tyla does when she sings pop and amapiano. This career is worth the time and effort and practicing every day is very important.

To know how to audition and get work as a singer, you need to be around other singers, musicians and do research online for the music opportunities for your age group and area you live in. When the time comes and you are finished with school/college and you are free and available 24/7, you can look for work through Entertainers Worldwide Jobs. Explore what "Africa 2025" is for when you are available (it entails extensive travel). They hold auditions for singers, actors and dancers. You will have to be available to travel a lot with this project so maybe keep up to date about it by exploring online and reading their website. You can also find work in your country, when you are ready, at the website StarNow. Look into Project Performer, search for Auditions in South Africa on Facebook, C-Major Productions at the Joburgh Theatre, and explore Talent Africa. Make sure that you have access to transportation and are available 24/7 in order to accept work.

Make sure you practice singing every day, get a strong, solid education in Music and be around supportive people in the field of music.

I hope this helps and I wish you well !
