AI will impact most jobs; in my opinion it will change how we work and our productivity. The more complex problems or issues can still be addressed by humans. AI reminds me of when Google was first introduced; people thought google would replace teaching or traditional learning methods; it simply enhanced our learning and increased access to knowledge across the globe. Humans can work alongside Google and use it to support how they work and learn; I imagine AI will be a similar experience in the coming years.

Here's a thought for you, Joe. You may not be replaced by an AI, but you might be replaced by someone that knows AI better than you do.

Don't focus too much on AI replacing a particular job category (accounting or otherwise). Will there be some job types that will be replaced or heavily impacted by AI? Yes, most likely. Er...most assuredly.

However, if you learn all you can about accounting and at the same time learn all you can about AI and how AI can be integrated into the accounting process, then you will be much more valuable than if you just learn accounting.

Spend some time researching and reading about AI. Get as deep as you can with it. Maybe take some Udemy (or similar) courses if you can. Get access to a decent (aka mainstream) chatbot and grill it for knowledge about AI. If you have contacts at a university, find out who you might be able to talk to that's in the AI space and set some time up to talk to them.

At the same time, research AI in accounting by talking to CPAs and others that are in accounting to find out how they are using AI in their jobs. Watch for ways that AI might be able to be applied in your own job.

At some point, a human will have to review the results from an AI. The same is true for most other fields, because AI models make mistakes and they hallucinate. We are likely a long way off from the point at which the lights could be turned off in the accounting department because an AI is running the show.

If you can learn all that you can about AI and accounting and learn how to integrate the two, then you might find that you are no longer an accountant but that you have become a consultant that is capable of helping businesses integrate AI into their accounting process. To me, that's magic.
