Sarah’s Answer

It depends on what you want to do exactly. I live in Texas, so some of the licensing is different since it varies state to state, but there are different ways to become a therapist. An LPC, LMFT or LMSW/LCSW requires a masters degree, internship, testing, and licensing. LPC focuses on symtkmology and therapy method. LMFT is focused on couple and family therapy. LMSW/LCSW is similar to LPC with more emphasis on environment and systems affecting the patient. LCDC requires some school, but not as much, and is heavy on acquiring experience in the field. LCDC is addiction/recovery focused. There is also a thing called peer support counselor that just requires a training and certification. Peer support is when a person has lived experience with mental illness and wants to help others learn to cope and feel less alone.
