Rurika’s Answer

What kind of geography are you interested in? Geography is a broad field, and the best fit depends on your interests.

If you're curious about urban structure and transportation, then geography through engineering, such as urban planning, might be a great path.
If you're interested in climate change or natural disasters, then geography through the sciences, like earth science or environmental studies, would be ideal.
If you're drawn to regional cultures or population dynamics, then geography through the humanities, such as cultural or human geography, would be a good match.

Armando de Jesús’s Answer

Hi Karol,

A Bachelor’s Degree typically takes four years of full-time study, and that applies to a major in geography as well. This is the standard academic path to begin a career in this field.
As for what you need to know, it depends on the area of geography you’re most interested in. Here are two key branches:

Physical Geography: Focuses on natural features and processes such as landforms, climate, ecosystems, and environmental changes.
Human Geography: Explores how people interact with their environments, including topics like urban development, migration, and cultural landscapes.

When considering this degree, it’s important to align your studies with your long-term goals and also consider market demand. This will help ensure that your education leads to meaningful job opportunities in areas like urban planning, environmental consulting, GIS analysis, or education.

Hello Karol. To study geography, you need to be curious about the world. You should enjoy learning about maps, countries, cultures, and the environment. Basic skills in math, science, and writing will help you a lot. You may also use tools like Geographic Information Systems (GIS), which are computer programs that help analyze maps and data. Learning to use GIS is very helpful for geography students, and many jobs in this field require it.

In college, a geography major usually takes about four years if you study full-time and work toward a bachelor's degree. During that time, you will take classes in both physical and human geography, as well as related subjects like environmental science. You may also need to do research projects or internships to gain experience.

After earning a degree in geography, you can work in many different fields. Some common jobs include urban planning, environmental consulting, teaching, mapping, or working with government agencies. Some people go on to get a master's degree if they want to specialize further or work in higher-level positions. Hope this helps.

Karin’s Answer

Hi Karol,

Geography is a very broad interdisciplinary field. There is physical geography that deals with natural environments and human geography that deals with people and societies. Depending on the specialization and focus areas you choose, you could end up closer to social sciences or closer to geosciences or closer to environmental sciences or even closer to architecture and city planning. Since you probably don't know yet what exactly you want to do, it would be important to choose a university that offers very broad foundations in all aspects of geography and choose your electives and maybe a minor wisely.

A bachelors degree is the minimum education requirement for a career in geography and takes 4 years. For many positions, e.g. in research a masters and/or PhD is required. Start with internships as soon as you can to get an idea what kind of work interests you most.

I hope this helps! All the best to you!
