What work can Civil Engineers take to create change in a community?

Do cities take contracts? Or do these Engineers apply to create new buildings etc. #Spring25

First, if you lived in that community and have returned, it's important to introduce yourself as a civil engineer and listen. See what problems they, as residents, perceive regarding housing, infrastructure, or services. Then, offer solutions "from within." This empathy with the community will bring about significant changes through the projects. And their gratitude in the future is incredibly rewarding and gratifying.

We do all sorts of cool stuff. In communities, we design roads, improve traffic flow, build building, develop water supply create parks and my favorite, because I spent most of my career doing it, we make dirty water clean. Engineers are basically peddlers. We sell our ideas. Agencies such as cities and special districts sign agreements with private engineers to plan, design and build projects. Engineers may do one element, two or all three depending on the hiring agency. We also work with state and federal agencies, and for larger firms, an engineer may work on projects that are international. You could develop a water supply in Kenya or design a highway in Sri Lanka.

An engineer may work directly for an agency or a state or for the federal government. We are all over the place. Your community may have a city engineer. He should be willing to talk to students as yourself. Give her or him a call.
