What do colleges really look for in an essay? How can I stand out in my application, other than grades? What are the most important qualities admission officers look for?

Im currently a senior going through the application process.

Pick a couple of you best qualities, skills or interests that relate to or can be used in your future professional field.
Write how or why you chose your major and how your qualities mentioned are useful for your future profession or career.
Make your essay reflect your maturity, discipline, learning from mistakes and perseverance. This is what colleges are looking for. Someone who is serious about their education, worth teaching and who will not waste everyone's time.
