Great question! In my experience, there are definitely tools that help me understand a topic like exercises and mock exams which definitely work.
However, the real test of true, deep understanding has always been trying to teach the subject to somebody else. In practical terms, this has meant organising study groups where we took turns in teaching the topic at hand to each others and have the "audience" ask questions and give feedback.
Later in my career, giving presentations and/or tutorials / workshops has been very useful to both make sure I understood the material and uncover any gap in my understanding.
However, it is worth remembering that sometimes, one just has to pass the exam and move on. This is to say that just cramming information for the sole purpose of passing a test has its place as well. It just cannot be all we do!
