Hi, Lisa !
Becoming a financial aid officer at a college campus is a wonderful career choice ! You will definitely be helping a lot of people start their academic life.
To answer your question, employers often require at least one year of experience in financial aid, student services, customer service, or a related field. Since that is the case, you have an enormous opportunity to get more than one year experience while you are at college through a Work Study job you can obtain directly at your college's Financial Aid Office. It would be like getting experience, direct and topic specific training and getting paid for it !
In your state of Missouri, you will need a Bachelors Degree in business administration, finance, or accounting. Familiarity with Title IV regulations and institutional financial aid policies is essential, but you can learn that through a Work Study job at the Financial Aid Office on your campus. It's not mandatory to be certified, but to boost your qualifications and increase your employability, you should obtain the Certified Financial Aid Administrator credential from the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators.
Achieving these steps can prepare you and qualify you for work in student financial aid.
About Work Study - visit the Financial Aid Office at your prospective college and apply for Federal Student Financial Aid. Select the Work Study option. When you get a response about your financial aid, you will have a Work Study grant and you can go to the Financial Aid Office and explain that you want a Work Study job there because you intend to become a Financial Aid officer after college. Start as a freshman because you will end up having four years experience before going into the job market and that will be awesome ! Find out more about this as soon as possible by calling or visiting the college's Financial Aid Office.
I hope this helps and I wish you all the best !
