What sort of issues could I run into with getting a job with a major in government and politics while federal jobs are being cut? Could this still impact me for my graduation year in 2028?

I am somewhat worried that after I graduate from college, I will have issues with finding a job for myself amid federal job cuts. This issue is also prevalent in my family, since my father was cut from his job in the state department.

This is a very relevant question to be asking these days, Zachary. I am sorry to hear that your dad lost his job and I imagine that there in Northern Virginia you probably know several people in your community whose parents have also lost their jobs. If this will be fully reversed and how quickly in the next administration is unknowable right now. Things to keep in mind, in my opinion, are that public service will always be a meaningful career pathway for those who go into it for the right reasons. Federal employment is not the only option: states and localities will also need good workers, as will non-profits and educational institutions.

My advice would be to try to get internships and/or jobs at the state or county/local levels where you can make connections and stay in touch with the people you meet there. If that work is appealing to you, let them know that and ask for suggestions on where to apply and who to reach out to.

Consider a minor in some area of technical expertise which will help you stand out and also serve as a back-up job option. Depending on your interests this might be in a language (Spanish), environmental studies, getting a teaching certificate, etc. If you can learn specific skills either in college or during an internship or job, these may be the skills which help you get your foot in the door for a government or think-tank job post-college.
