Hi Amy! I'm YoonJi and I work at CareerVillage. I love your question for 2 reasons, one personal and the other professional.
Personal connection: My sister was a nurse for over a decade. We lived together while she completed an accelerated nursing program (after her bachelor's degree in Kinesiology), and I got to see her study hard, go on different hospital rotations, and even be her guinea pig while she practiced drawing blood. She was randomly placed on a cardiac rotation and ended up really enjoying it. She became an adults cardiac nurse and then after a few years transitioned to the pediatric cardiac ICU unit, which she ended up loving. But to be honest, it's tough seeing a lot of blood and doing intense care for very sick patients. However, it is incredibly meaningful work. My sister has kept in touch with the patients and families she has supported over the years and those bonds are real and deep. I encourage you to read through other "nurse" or "nursing" related advice using our search bar up top to read through advice from actual nurses. There's a lot of good personal insights and experiences shared on CareerVillage! Here's a shortcut, if helpful. https://www.careervillage.org/?q=nurse
As for the professional side of this question, I'd recommend you try out our new AI-powered career readiness platform, Coach! We have several nursing activities and a module about being a nurse. Some of the activities include: Explore a day in the life of a nurse, Experience what it's like to be a nurse, Choose your nursing specialty, and Explore your nursing pathway. You can try them out here: https://www.aicareercoach.org/nurses. You can also sign up as a learner at https://www.aicareercoach.org/ and access the other activities related to all things career readiness (how to prepare for an informational interview, how to improve your resume, etc.)
Wishing you the best of luck! It's a fantastic career where you make a real and lasting impact on people's lives during some of their hardest times. (And there's strong job security as the US and the world are facing a nursing shortage!)
