What does it take to become a nurse practitioner ?

What classes do I have to take; what undergraduate prerequisites and how many hours of lab time do you need to become a nurse practitioner? Is there required logging hours to be able to pass a class? Is Organic Chemistry a pre-requisite? If I'm directly admitted to the nursing program, what does that look like while also completing my prerequisites?

Hi Victoria! While I am not a nurse, I work for CareerVillage.org and wanted to make sure you're aware of our free other platform: Coach. We have dedicated activities for students pursuing nursing occupations and in fact are currently running a scholarship program until Dec 12 -- it's a great opportunity to get this exact question answered by a trusted tool AND enter yourself to potentially win an awesome scholarship. The tool was built exactly for questions like this one!! Here's more information on the scholarship and how to enter/sign up: https://challenges.careervillage.org/coach-2025-nursing-scholarship-2/

When I attended nursing school years ago, the program outlined all the required classes, including prerequisites. I completed these prerequisites in the first two years, and the nursing courses began in the second year while I was still finishing the prerequisites. Later, when I went back to get my Master's in Nursing to become a nurse practitioner, the only extra class I needed was statistics, since it wasn't part of my undergraduate courses. Essentially, the school will provide you with a study plan. If you need any prerequisites before advancing, the school will inform you.

Programs differ, each with its own curriculum and requirements. Because schools and times change, it's hard to give a definite answer.
