What are some gifts that you could give to your roommate as a welcome or hello on the first day of college?
I will be in college next year in the fall 0f 2026 and I want to give my roommate that I will staying with on campus a welcome or hello gift on the first day. (I just need to wait until the spring to fill out a roommate application then see who my roommate will be). Any ideas on what I could do as a welcome/hello gift?

Hey Kailynn! When I moved into my dorm, I wanted to make a good first impression on my roommate... I didn’t know her yet, so I thought a small, thoughtful gift could be a nice “hello.” I ended up giving her a little plant for her desk and a fun notebook just something cute and useful She loved it and it actually sparked our first conversation! From that day, we started sharing tips about classes, dorm life, and even favorite snacks.
So my advice: pick something small, thoughtful, and practical... it’s the gesture that counts, not how big or expensive it is.

Hi Kailynn,
That's very sweet of you! Keep it fairly neutral since you don't know your roommate yet.
I think I would keep it to some sweets/chocolates etc. or some nice tea bags/cappucino pouches. You could make a small platter of goodies for the two of you to enjoy together.
A small plushy/teddy or a coffee mug with your school logo, a nice pen or a key chain would be other ideas.

Hi! That's very nice of you. I would consider giving the gift of being a courteous and welcoming roommate. Get to know your roommate a little bit so that you can consider giving them a thoughtful gift. Or maybe they would prefer a thoughtful gesture vs. being given a physical gift.
