Hi Victoria. If you're close to finishing your degree in Elementary Education, it's a good idea to start applying for teaching jobs before you graduate. Many schools post job openings months ahead, and they often consider candidates who are still finishing student teaching, as long as you'll have your degree and teaching license by the start of the school year. Applying early gives you a head start and more chances to secure a position.
Student teaching is one of your strongest advantages. During this time, you're gaining real classroom experience, learning to plan lessons, and managing students. Even if you haven't graduated yet, you can highlight these experiences in your resume and cover letters to show that you're ready for the classroom.
It also helps to plan your applications carefully. Make sure your resume, teaching portfolio, and any certifications are ready. Your portfolio can include lesson plans, reflections from student teaching, and special skills, or anything that shows you are prepared and capable.
In short, you don't have to wait until graduation to start applying. Begin in the months before you finish your degree, while still focusing on student teaching and building connections. This approach gives you more opportunities, helps you gain confidence, and increases your chances of landing a teaching job right after graduation.
