There are two answers to this question. Most aerospace engineers are mechanical engineers designing air vehicles. Let's say that you're retrofitting a Boeing aircraft to add an antenna to the roof to link to a satellite. The antenna will be purchased. Your job requires that you design a mounting bracket for it and a fiberglass blister to cover it, and route cables through the vehicle for power and signal. Also you'll need to install a power supply with its mounting brackets nearby. You'll also have to coordinate with different departments to see how you're impacting them. Also, because it's a retrofit, you'll make instructions on how to cut the skin of the aircraft to fit the new antenna. In the meantime, you'll coordinate with the aerospace engineer in charge of aerodynamics. He will run an analysis on your blister to verify that the drag is minimal. And he'll schedule bird-strike tests for your blister. There is typically one aerodynamics engineer for every 30 mechanical engineers. Most of what the mechanical engineers design has no effect on the outside skin of the air vehicle. Just so you know, there are lots of space vehicle jobs popping up now. It's much easier to get a mechanical engineering job with a space vehicle company than it is to get an aerodynamics job with them. Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any follow up questions.
