How do I figure out what steps to take if I want to go into sports law?

I am a Senior in high school who just finished applying for schools. I do not know what steps to take to reach my ultimate goal of working in sports law within Formula One racing.

Hi Myleigh,

I actually just finished applying to law schools (for a Fall 2026 start), so I feel qualified to answer this question. To go into sports law, you need to first graduate from an undergraduate university. You can check me, but I'm pretty sure all law schools require this. While in undergrad, the coursework you take doesn't matter as much (although choosing more rigorous majors looks better for your applications for law school). In your case, maybe a major in sports management would be appropriate, but I would consider adding a major or a few minors to strengthen your resume for law school applications (if I am correct, I think sports management degrees are somewhat on the easier side of college degrees). Then, get good grades and be involved on campus somehow (clubs and varsity sports are both excellent resume boosters). This basically covers one side of your law school application. The other side of the application is your LSAT score, which is like the SAT but for law school admissions. Study for the LSAT (I recommend doing a prep course. My personal journey in studying for the LSAT was about a year of studying, but people usually study for around 6 months) to get a score good enough to be around the median score of the school you want to go to (I should also note that if you are above median in GPA and LSAT, you have a good chance of getting a full scholarship, if you were wondering about cost). GPA and LSAT are the two most important data points for law school admissions committees, but your academic history (including the difficulty of the classes taken) and campus involvement also matters. Then you just need to write good essays for your law school applications. Some essays can be reused like a common app essay, but others can be specific to the school.

That is the high level explanation of applying to law schools. Once you're actually in law school, there should be a sort of concentration related to sports management that you can choose just like a major in your undergraduate career. That should set you up pretty nicely for a career in sports law. Obviously, the better school you go to, the easier access you will have to this career, and Formula One in particular. Formula One is a really popular sport and I'm sure that not very many people are able to work in that job as a lawyer, so going to a good school (likely within the Top 14) will likely be required. So make sure to be studious in both undergrad and in law school.

Hope this was helpful.
