Michelle’s Answer

Hello, Akenya !

This cannot be answered in general as the eligibility for business grants depends on a lot of specifics about the business.

Grants are typically awarded after a competitive application process that requires detailed documentation, including business plans, financial records, and a clear explanation of how the funds will be used. The funds are often restricted to specific purposes.

For Grants to read about and see if you qualify for, you can go to the websites Grants, the U.S. Small Business Administration which provides grants to nonprofit organizations and community groups to support entrepreneurship, the Amex Shop Small Grants Program and the 500 Global Flagship Accelerator. The U.S. Small Business Administration does not provide grants for starting or expanding a business. Also check about Grants at your local Small Business Development Center or Chamber of Commerce. You'll have to be detailed about the business when you inquire.

For help in starting a business where you live, visit The Small Business Development Center in Berkeley, California, which is part of the East Bay Small Business Development Center. They can ask you questions about your business and direct you in the right direction and offer services to you. Make sure to be detailed about what type of business you are trying to get assistance for. The City of Berkeley’s Office of Economic Development collaborates with the East Bay SBDC and other partners to support small businesses with services such as finding commercial space, navigating zoning and building permits, marketing, talent recruitment, and accessing funding opportunities like the Berkeley Revolving Loan Fund. Also connect with The Renaissance Entrepreneurship Center, Tech Futures Group, and the Berkeley Startup Cluster.

Keep in mind that in California, it is generally easier for nonprofits to access government grants compared to for-profit businesses, particularly for initial funding. Government funding is a significant component of the nonprofit sector's financial model. For-profit businesses face more limited and competitive grant opportunities. This is just general information, not knowing what your business is, and you will need to get exact detailed information from some of the places I've mentioned.

Best wishes to you as you start your new business !
