Hello, Mary-Drew !
It depends on if you want to do acting as a professional career or as a hobby.
Not knowing your plan for acting, I would say that you should begin at your high school. Ask about a drama club or who directs the shows or plays at your school. Join any acting extracurriculars and participate in the shows which you can audition for. Also see if there are any extracurriculars involving film or video at your school.
If your high school doesn't offer anything in the area of acting, connect with the ActToo Players in your town of Franklin, Tennessee for acting lessons. You will need to be trained for this profession before you can audition and be chosen for parts in movies, plays, TV, etc. outside of high school. You can also go to college and Major in Theatre with an emphasis on Acting. If you are not prepared and skilled as of yet, that's fine, but it's not something to just jump into without a lot of awareness about acting and the entertainment industry. You can also explore Franklin Brentwood Arts Academy in your town of Franklin. Ask your parents to contact them for information and acting lessons do cost, so your parents will need to be involved. You didn't mention your age.
If you are under 18, one of your parents will have to manage your acting activity outside of your school. They will need to be available to provide transportation to and from and stay with you during auditions, rehearsals and performances. If you are 18 or older, you can manage your acting activity on your own. You will need to be trained and then obtain acting experience by being in shows before you can confidently audition and be able to create and develop a role for stage and screen.
Acting is an opinion business and you will be judged, in the professional realm, on how you look, sound and your presentation. This is why, if you do not know anything yet about the business, it's best to start out in high school or college. College would prepare you for the career and you'd know exactly what to do after you graduate. If you attempt to audition or do extra work without training, you may be told that you do not have enough experience. You didn't mention anything about where you're at with this or if it's just a thought. Try not to invest in any photos, resumes, etc. until you build a substantial list of experience.
It's a lot of time, money for classes and traveling to invest in for just a hobby. So decide if this is a planned professional career or if you just want to do it when you're available. You will also have to wait for roles in your age range. You wouldn't be cast at your actual age, rather the age that you look. That is why connecting with the Act Too Players or the Franklin Brentwood Arts Academy will be a beneficial start for you if your school does not have any acting classes or clubs.
Once you are trained, part of that training teaches you how to do the career. Much of it depends on your circumstances and you did not provide enough information for further advice. Acting lessons online are not sufficient because acting is heavily interactive live with other people.
You will know that you are ready for acting during your education or training when people that know you start asking you to audition for their projects. That's how I knew I was ready and it came on very soon after I started my college path. Being in acting is also not a solitary thing. You must be around acting and tech people practically all the time to learn all that you can about the skill as well as what is happening in the community for acting opportunities. Go to see a lot of plays and movies. And remember that you do not choose what medium or roles you get, the director or casting people do, so let things flow naturally as you learn the craft. You don't "get into", you audition and the auditors select who will be in the project.
Do not use social media for acting. Keep your social media accounts for your personal topics but later on when you have a resume and feel ready, there are websites for actors that you can post your information on and become aware of auditions. Remember that through the process of your training and education, you will learn how to start a professional career or even if you want to do it occasionally for a hobby. Take it one step at a time and you will learn a lot !
I wish you well in all you do !
