With most food service organizations managers are normally associates that have worked their way up the ranks. They are also associates with excellent customer service traits, dependable, and have great integrity. If you are currently an employee of McDonald's ask your current manager what the qualifications are? How did they become to a manager? What qualities do they see in you that would make you a good manager? What should you change?

My best recommendation is to learn all the basics of processes, standards, recipes, and the basic functions of the work tools. It is important to familiarize yourself with the sales metrics of the store where you work, such as the average ticket size and which items you can offer in each transaction to increase that sales ticket amount. Also, learn about KPIs (Key Performance Indicators), which are metrics established by corporate. You should have a good command of inventory management, reports on shrinkage, and techniques to minimize these losses. Most importantly, learn how to lead a team, be collaborative, and understand the personal needs of your staff. After working for six years to pay for my university studies in a similar field, I learned that the most crucial skill for managing a store like this is personnel management — the staff. Good luck!

Unfortunately, i am unfamiliar with that process. My only advice would be to find a current manager and get their thoughts.
Additionally, working hard, being on time and helping others always helps to get visibility for promotions.

In my opinion, the correct answer will require context.
Are you asking about being a General Manager of a store or are you asking about being an assistant manager?
If you want to be an assistant most of them work their way up. Start as an employee and work hard, learn as much about the business as you can. Learn every station and every function. Ask for mentorship once you have a little time under your belt an take ownership of things. Lead by example, and your superiors should notice.
If you are wanting to be a GM however this is a completely different skill set. While the knowledge of the store itself is still important, being a GM is more about managing the business as opposed to doing the work. You have more of a focus on sales, labor, and supply costs. Typically a qualification for this would be an MBA or related experience. To work your way up to be a GM at a franchise like McDonalds or any other fast food restaurant would require years of practical experience.
While this is not my area of expertise, I have worked in the food industry in the past and my wife was a GM at a Papa John's. She worked her way up and did it in a few years so it is possible, but its an exceeding difficult job and requires lots of long hours of work. I would also be certain that you have an eye for cleanliness as this is super important in your chosen industry.

Hi Rylan, I would absolutely suggest getting a part time job at McDonalds so you can learn all the functions including ordering/cashier, cooking, restaurant maintenance, etc. Once employed there, ask the current Manager about their path to becoming a Manager. Also ask them if they would be willing to serve as a mentor or coach to you so you can learn as much as possible. Always stay curious and open to learning.
