Is there any field or job that combines the three AI and technology and community service organizations ( like United Nations Volunteers programme)?

I'm currently in the 10th grade, and I am unsure of what field to pursue in the future. I am interested in community service and volunteering, but in this ever-growing digital world, AI and technology also need to be considered as a career option, so I want to know if there is any way possible where both of these fields can be combined, or even better?

Marco’s Answer

Students who are passionate about helping others can confidently combine community service with technology. Using artificial intelligence and technology for social impact is a promising and rewarding path. By learning computer science, data analysis, and AI, students can develop solutions that improve lives, support communities, and tackle global issues like education, healthcare, climate change, and disaster response. Exploring organizations like the United Nations and tech-focused nonprofits can show students how their skills can benefit others worldwide. With curiosity, dedication, and a solid foundation in both technical and social subjects, students can help create a future where technology is not only advanced but also compassionate and inclusive.

What You Can Do Right Now (as a 10th Grader)

You don't have to decide everything today. Here's an easy, stress-free plan:

1. Build a Strong Foundation

- Focus on math and computer science (basic coding is very helpful)
- Study social studies, global studies, or environmental science
- This combination is powerful.

2. Start Small with Tech

- Learn basic coding (Python is useful for AI)
- Use free platforms like Scratch, Code.org, or Coursera (when you're ready)

3. Volunteer with a Tech Angle

- Help nonprofits with websites or data
- Join or start a tech-for-good or service club
- Participate in hackathons focused on social issues

4. Keep the UN Goal in Mind—but Stay Flexible

- Many people working at the UN or similar organizations:
- Study computer science, data science, engineering, or information systems
- Pair these with international relations, public policy, or development studies

Divyanshu’s Answer

Great question!
In 10th grade, the best move is to start building the core skills that will make you useful on real AI volunteer projects and help you stand out when you apply.

1) Learn the foundations of AI
- AI and Machine Learning fundamentals
- Natural Language Processing (NLP) basics

2) Learn Python
Python is the main language used in AI. Start with:
- Variables, loops, functions
- Working with files and data
- Common libraries later like pandas, numpy, scikit-learn

3) Learn spreadsheets (Excel or Google Sheets)
Spreadsheets are surprisingly important in AI and data work. Make sure you are comfortable with:
- Sorting/filtering, charts
- Formulas: SUM, AVERAGE, COUNTIF, IF, VLOOKUP, Basic REGEX etc.
- Pivot tables

4) Learn Alteryx
Data analysis is important in AI. Alteryx is a powerful, code-free data analytics tool.

5) Build communication skills
In AI you often need to explain complex ideas simply. Work on:
- Storytelling, explaining the “why” behind your work
- Public speaking and presentation
- Active listening and asking good questions

6) Start applying while you learn
As you build these skills, start searching and applying for remote AI volunteering opportunities. This CareerVillage thread includes examples and ideas you can use as a starting point:

Adrienne’s Answer

There are many exciting career paths that combine community service, technology, and AI. Start by exploring what truly interests you, as this will help you find your path, even if things change over time. Think about whether you prefer a creative approach or enjoy logical problem-solving.

If creativity is your strength, consider digital marketing. You'll gain skills like managing social media, designing campaigns, and expanding online reach, which are valuable for nonprofits and businesses. You can also volunteer your skills for causes you care about.

If you enjoy logic and problem-solving, coding might be a great fit. It plays a crucial role in developing tools and applications for fields like education, healthcare, and nonprofit work. With the rapid growth of AI, having technical skills can open up many opportunities to blend helping people with technology.

Both paths let you merge service, technology, and impact, depending on what you love most. There are endless career options that combine AI, technology, community service, and volunteering. You have plenty of exciting possibilities to explore as you discover what feels right for you.

Divyesh’s Answer

Non-profit organizations need strong AI and analytics skills, but there's a shortage of qualified people. If you want to work in this field, focus on STEM subjects in high school and consider majoring in Data Analytics, AI, Computer Science, or Business Analytics to improve your job prospects.

Start coding regularly and use open datasets from local, state, or federal sources, or explore Kaggle for datasets. This will help you understand AI, analytics, and dashboarding concepts.

Even if you choose a different major, you can still volunteer with community service organizations to apply your self-taught skills.

Andrea’s Answer

It makes me so happy to hear you want to work for a community service organization - we need more people like you! Honestly, I think by the time you are starting your first job pretty much all jobs are going to entail using AI in some way. So I would encourage you to 1) get comfortable with AI, think creatively, don't be afraid and 2) think about what issues you care about and learn about organizations tackling those issues. Divyanshu's suggestions above around specific skills are also useful. But generally, I think follow your heart.

Community service organization are like all organizations. They have all kinds of functions like any other business - IT teams, finance team, human resources, program design... And those fields are all going to be impacted by AI in the coming years. No need for a special course of study or narrowing your path!
