Hi Ismael,

What a great question! If you truly feel you have the talent to play football professionally, the only missing ingredient to take it more seriously is your commitment level. Youth athletes who are most likely to reach the highest level are those who are able to pair their talent with relentless drive and desire to be great. What does that look like? Sacrifice, grind, dedication, stamina, resolve, and an openness to outside perspectives like from coaches, trainers, etc. Doing all of these things will not guarantee anything except giving yourself the very best opportunity to succeed, a lot of other things have to go your way, but many are beyond your control.

Ismael, simply control what you can control: your attitude and effort. If the areas above are being consistently done, I promise you will go further than most. Don't forget about your academics too! Having great grades in addition to what is here will only open more, even nicer doors (think D1 athlete).

One final thing to consider, even if all goes well and you end up in the NFL (that's the 1% of anyone who ever picks up a football), what kind of MAN are you when you walk away from the sport and still have most of your life to live? Start thinking about that now and I promise you will be more proud of that answer at 40 years of age.

Wishing you nothing but success and health in your journey brother!

Jerome’s Answer

A couple of my boys play both school basketball and AAU basketball, it can be quite the commitment. One of the things I see with successful young athletes as that they are coachable and willing to listen to feedback. If you are on your school team, ask your coaches what you do to improve. There are also many community football programs where you can join a team and develop your skills.

The players that I really love coaching are great teammates and those who push themselves to learn and grow.

A few thoughts for you.

-First, make a commitment to your physical fitness. Develop a training routine that you follow on and off season.
-Learn everything you can about the sport. Books, articles, TV shows, podcasts. Be a student of the game. Read about successful - and unsuccessful - players.
-Along the same lines, talk to people. Current players, former players, coaches, trainers, school administrators. Ask them for tips and advice. Make connections that might help you join a team, or get you opportunities. Be open and curious.
-In addition to taking steps to create opportunities for yourself to play, consider additional football opportunities (both while you're in school and beyond). Would you be interested in being team manager? What about a major in sports management, physical therapy, etc.

How amazing would it be if you could make a sport that you love your life's work. Good luck!
