You don't have to know everything on day one, so look into local vocational programs or community college courses where you can earn a certification while learning the technical side of modern engines. Many shops are also willing to take on an eager apprentice who's ready to learn the ropes from the ground up, so don't be afraid to stop by a local garage and ask for advice on how they got started.
