To begin your nursing career, you'll need to pass your boards. You can take these state boards within a month after finishing school. While you're still in school, you can apply for a nursing job and start as soon as you pass the boards. This means if you finish school in December, you can typically start working by February.

You can usually start a nursing job a few weeks to a few months after graduating from nursing school but it depends mainly on when you pass the NCLEX and receive your license.

After graduation, the biggest step is applying for authorisation to test (ATT) and scheduling the NCLEX. Some graduates take the exam within 2–4 weeks if their paperwork processes quickly. Once you pass, your state board of nursing issues your license, and that’s when you’re officially eligible to work as a registered nurse. In many states, the license number posts online within days of passing.

Some hospitals hire “graduate nurses” before they’ve passed the NCLEX. In those cases, you may start working in a limited role under supervision, but you’ll need to pass the exam within a specific time frame to continue. Other employers require a fully active license before your first day.

For example, I’ve seen grads finish in May, take the NCLEX in June, receive their license by early July, and start hospital orientation later that month. But I’ve also seen delays when transcripts, background checks, or exam scheduling took longer than expected which pushed start dates out by a couple of months.

A practical tip: apply for jobs during your final semester. Many hospitals recruit early and schedule start dates around expected licensure. That way, once you pass the NCLEX, you can transition quickly.

Takeaway: The fastest path is graduation → quick NCLEX scheduling → passing → license issued. If you stay on top of paperwork and testing timelines, you can often begin working within 1–3 months after graduating.
