Hello Ava:
Before you go into business for yourself make sure you have good business skills, being in business for yourself is not easy. In addition it can take years for a business to become established and profitable. Furthermore you may want to work for some else first so you can see the day to day functions of how a business operates. Remember: Being In Business Is Not For Everyone.

Majoring in psychology is a great start, but just a bachelor’s degree won’t make you a therapist. You’ll need to go to graduate school and get licensed, like as an LCSW, LMFT, LPC, or psychologist. This means earning a master’s or doctorate, completing supervised clinical hours, and passing licensing exams before you can work on your own.
When it comes to starting your own office, most people don’t jump right into a private practice. It’s usually better to first work in a group practice, hospital, school, or clinic. This is where you really gain skills, confidence, and experience with different clients. You also learn how documentation, insurance, and ethical guidelines work, which is important if you want to run your own business someday.
Opening your own practice is definitely possible, but it’s something that makes more sense after you’re fully licensed and have real-world experience. Think of those first few years working for someone else as training and preparation, not settling. You’re building a strong foundation so that when you do open your own office, you feel ready and confident.
