What to do for weld?

I am 13 and want to be a welder. Which type of welding should a beginner start? What school classes will help me the most? What is the most important safety rule here? Do welders work in shops or outside more? What is a normal work day like today?

Hi Nate! All good questions. The company I work for is a teaching workplace. When I teach first time welders, I generally start them on GMAW (MIG) steel. It's a little bit "easier" to get the hang of. Then I teach GMAW aluminum, and then on to GTAW (TIG) of steel, aluminum, and stainless steel. As far as school classes, if your school offers a metals class or even a welding class, you would benefit. Also, a strong math core would be beneficial. Once you make it to high school, if your school district has a Vo-Tech school, definitely enroll in that. Some even offer job placement at graduation. The single most important safety rule is to WEAR YOUR PPE (Personal Protective Equipment). Start good safety habits now. Don't tack without your hood. You won't get a nice tan from arc burn. Just pain. Entry level auto dark hoods are fairly cheap. You can see everything you need to while tacking with it down. Wear those safety glasses. You only get 1 set of eyes and there is some UV resistance in them. Welders work in both places depending on what type of welding you decide to do. There really isn't a normal work day in either setting (shop or outside). Problems come up, parts and pieces don't fit, humidity might kick in on a MIG aluminum day, or there might be a hot job that has to get done before you leave work. You learn to take the day as it comes for the most part. Good luck in your journey, Nate!
Take care,
Dave
