What is the best career path for game designers?
What would be the recommended path for an aspiring video game designer entering college: Double major with cybersecurity and game design, double major with computer science and game design, game design with a minor in computer science, or game design with a minor in cybersecurity?

Hi Noah,
It's smart to think about your future before starting college. Connecting your studies to your career goals can really help.
Game designers come from various backgrounds. Some study game design directly, while others come from fields like computer science, art, writing, or psychology. The key is to build strong design skills and show them through projects or a portfolio.
From your options, combining game design with computer science is often the best choice. Knowing some programming helps you communicate with developers, create prototypes, and solve technical problems. Even basic programming skills can give you more freedom in designing games.
Make sure your studies help you develop game design skills, not just learn about them. Look for courses that let you:
- work on group projects
- create small playable games
- join game jams or student projects
- quickly prototype ideas
Cybersecurity is useful but usually focuses on protecting networks, not designing games. Big online games might need security experts, but that's a different role.
A good path is to:
- major in game design with a computer science minor, or
- major in computer science while studying game design and making games on the side.
Both paths are solid. Just make sure you have a few small games or prototypes to show your design thinking by graduation.
In college, try to:
- join a game development club or group
- participate in game jams to learn teamwork and design
- create small projects regularly instead of one big project
- play and study other games to understand good gameplay mechanics
There's no single way to enter game design. Success comes from a mix of study, practice, and teamwork. Stay curious, keep building projects, and learn to work with others. This approach forms the foundation studios look for in designers.
Your question shows you're already thinking ahead, which is a great start.
- get involved in a game development club or group on campus
- get involved in game jams (these teach teamwork and design)
- make small projects often rather than one giant, perfect project
- play and analyze other games to see why their gameplay mechanics are good

I'll be 100% honest with you, the game development market is tough. So are CS and Cyber. But don't let that get you down! I would 100% say you should major in Computer Science with a minor in Game Development if possible, and make some games during college. Publish them yourself on steam. Find some buddies who are good at art and have them do that part. Make an LLC and try and sell them! It doesn't matter if they suck, but if you don't try you won't know how to do it.
