I want to purse coaching in my local community after I graduate college. What should I focus on and do to make that happen?

After I graduate college, I want to coach in my local community. What college classes/programs would tailor myself to get a coaching job/be more prepared for it?

You’re not “too late” at all—wanting to coach after college is actually a great place to start.

Focus on three things during and after school:

- Build coaching skills early: practice active listening, giving feedback, and goal‑setting (you can get this in psychology, education, leadership, or coaching‑specific courses).

- Gain hands‑on experience: volunteer as a mentor, tutor, or youth leader in your community so you already have real examples when you apply for coaching roles.

- Pick complementary classes: look for courses in psychology, education, sports science, or leadership/management; many coaches also benefit from basic first‑aid, safety, and communication classes.

If you tell me what kind of coaching you’re thinking (sports, youth, life, career, etc.), I can suggest specific course types or small actions tailored to your local community.

Hi Landon,

That's a great goal! While college classes in anthropology, psychology, or sociology might help, you should definitely explore coaching programs or certifications. Check if your college offers them or look for options outside. Also, try to gain experience at your college's career counseling office. The career counselors can give you valuable advice on your career goals and teach you how to become a coach or counselor.

I hope this helps you get started!
