Hey Savana, there are actually a ton of lesser-known nursing careers beyond the typical hospital bedside roles! Some that fly under the radar include forensic nursing, nurse informaticist (combining nursing with data and tech systems), legal nurse consultant, nurse navigator, infection preventionist, nurse entrepreneur, telehealth nurse, cruise ship nurse, nurse lobbyist, and even nursing roles in insurance companies doing utilization review. From my own experience working in consulting and tech, I can tell you that the healthcare industry has a huge and growing need for people who can bridge the gap between clinical knowledge and things like data analytics, process improvement, and systems implementation, so a nurse who picks up skills in those areas can carve out a really unique and well-paying niche. The key takeaway as a freshman is to keep your eyes open because nursing opens way more doors than most people realize!

Ghada’s Answer

There isn’t one exact number of nursing careers in the United States, but there are dozens of specialties—often estimated between 40 and over 100. For example, Johnson & Johnson Nursing Campaign notes that there are 90+ nursing specialties (https://nursing.jnj.com/specialty
), while NurseJournal reports 100+ specialties (https://nursejournal.org/resources/nursing-specialties-guide/
). Even more basic lists, like from National University, still identify at least 39 different types of nurses (https://www.nu.edu/blog/types-of-nurses/
). This shows that nursing in the U.S. is a very diverse field with many lesser-known career paths beyond traditional hospital roles.
