“How do I figure out the right major and classes to take in college so I can eventually work with pro athletes and manage their finances”?

I’m a two‑year varsity captain, a four‑year starter, and a student with a 3.92 GPA. I’m competitive, disciplined, and I’ve always been the kind of person who leads by example. I know I want a career in business and finance, and my long‑term goal is to help professional athletes make smart financial decisions and build stability for their future. I want to make sure I’m choosing the right academic path to get there, and I need to know the classes I should be taking. #Spring26

Hi,

As a former college and career advisor in Chicago, I can say the first thing to consider is the difference between something that is a match for you vs. what is a good fit for you. For example, when researching internships, fellowships, gigs, or long-term roles, don't just look at the title or the salary because that will get old really fast if the culture or role makes you miserable and isn't aligned to who you are as a person.

This is an industry based a lot on contacts and experiences. Think about who you know - Were you an athlete or do you know athletes from college or semi-pro to get you started?

There's a site called pro-fellow that is a database of fellowships, grad programs, and other opportunities. You could search there to see if anything aligns.

Consider reaching out directly to sports management agencies ("Cold call" via their company site, social media and even via LinkedIn. Share your resume and interests).

Give an AI platform a detailed request using your question above and any verbiage from the answers you get - ask it to create a table with links of the exact companies or kinds of companies you want to work with with active and open roles. You can also ask questions about the trajectory to representing a professional athlete. Good Luck.
