I'm going to New York University to major in drama! What is more important with a major like that in Nyc: The connections I will make or the courses I will be taking?

I’d say both are important of course. But honestly, there are many great drama schools in other cities. You’ve decided to go to the one in NY because … well, New York!
Connections are still the main way people book anything. So get to know as many people as possible! Be open to who you are talking to and be curious about what they do. It isn’t just about meeting a director who will give you a job - it’s about meeting a design student who invites you to an art gallery opening where you meet a playwright who invites you to their reading where you meet a fellow actor that you end up collaborating with.
Have a handy line ready if you want to stay connected: “I want to know what you’re doing next! Can I give you my number?” “ Are you on IG?”
Go to everything you are invited to! Ok, maybe not that sketchy party at 2am, but try to see and experience as much as you can. I wish I hadn’t been too tired or lazy to pass on some invites. The experience will be a learning opportunity no matter what and the more you take part in the cultural life of the city the easier it is to meet and talk to new people. A great conversation starter is always “I just saw…”
Lastly, don’t be shy. Have a short, confident but modest elevator pitch ready to share “I go to ____ and lately I’ve been interested in ______” Not every connection has to be one where you are looking to gain something; it’s really about being curious about people and finding where you connect.
