What study strategies should I use?
Hello! High school senior here. As I prepare for my college journey, is there any essential study habits that I should adopt? I know college is different than high school academically and I would just like to know. Thank you!

Hello, I am also a high school student and have taken act prep and psychology and both have taught me some very useful skills. I would recommend doing some research on psychology study habits and experiment with them and find which ones work best. From my experience with studying, I have a lot of trouble staying focused I tend to think about all the other things I'd rather be doing so I normally turn on music or white noise or something along those lines. There are psychology techniques like reward systems where you study for a set amount of time or do a certain number of assignments and reward yourself with something that makes you happy, you can also try conditioning yourself to associate a certain song or scent with studying (there are many ways to condition yourself that you can research), it is also proven that eating something sweet while studying can significantly help focus. Something I learned from ACT prep is to not get on any screens or electronics while taking breaks from studying as it can disrupt your mental flow, doing something active like walking can be more beneficial.

Hi Solomon! Don't stress! You will find methods that work for you as you adapt to college life.
The first thing to do is figure out when/how you are the most focused! Do you like to wake up early and get your studying in or are you more of a night owl? Can you focus at a shared table with others or do you prefer a solo-session? This might take some trial and error but you'll get into a groove and learn how you study best. From there here are some tips that helped me in in college:
- Create a study schedule for yourself around your class schedule and any clubs/activities you do. Write in your calendar when you are going to study or complete assignments for specific subjects. This is so important to staying organized and on top of your classes!
-Taking notes in class and then reorganizing them into an outline and adding details/making connections. Even if your original notes are organized, rewriting them and looking for areas to add detail or how you can reword things for better clarity is a great form of studying.
- Flashcards are great, but making them yourself is key! Similar to the note above, writing out the details is the main part of studying
