What, if any, additional certifications do you need in New Jersey in order to be able to teach in a special education Job Skills program for students who have graduated but are continuing to attend school until age 21?

I am currently a high school senior planning to attend college in Fall, 2026. I plan to study Special Education. However, I do not want to be an In Class Support teacher. Instead, I want to help post-grad high school students learn life skills and job skills so that they have options once they reach the age of 21 and need to leave the public school system. So, I want to know if I need any additional training in order to be qualified for such a position.

Hi Aimee,

Hello ! How wonderful you want to help people your age get right into the main stream of life. That is very commendable.

This is not my field, but my first impression was to speak with a Social Worker about what programs are looking for people with your (future) degree. Most likely you will need a license for extended work, as well as the usual teaching certificate you will gain after your 4 years.

Also, as your Guidance Counselor at your high school. They have tons of knowledge.
