Will attending a 2-year Electrical program and earning an AOS degree help me apply and get into a local IBEW Electrical Union after school?

I am looking for advice from existing union members and electricians to see if this is a good path to help me get into the local union.

What the union wants more is time on the job. The degree can help to show interest, but they really want to know that the person showing up understands the nature of the work and wants to be dedicated to the work. The degree might be a booster, but it won't be a guarantee. The hardest part for the JATC or IBEW is to keep someone in the program who takes it seriously. If the area you live in has a problem with finding people with an interest, then a 2 year degree might help. If the area you live in has a problem with apprentices and helpers showing up to work, then they might not care. Someone in the apprenticeship might see you having a two year degree as a downside. They might think if they bring you on and give you another two years of education, you can leave and get your license because you have the four years of required education. This means they gave you two years of free instruction with no benefit to the unions investment.

Braydon - I don't think you necessarily need to get a degree.
A lot of the IBEW unions have training programs. You start as an apprentice and work your way to journeyman. I would check with the various electrical companies in your area and the unions and get some direction from them.

I figured I should get a degree in the timeframe I wait. I didn't know anyone knew if it would help secure a spot. Thank you! Braydon
