How do you deal with feeling behind or comparing yourself to others in college or early career stages?

It’s easy to feel like others are ahead, especially with internships, jobs, or achievements. I’m curious how professionals handled that pressure and stayed focused on their own path.

Hi Niki,

This is such a real feeling, and you’re not alone in it.

Short answer: comparing yourself to others is a trap. Everyone does it, but it’s not a fair or useful way to measure where you are.

WHY COMPARISON DOESN’T WORK
When you compare yourself to someone else:
- You’re seeing their highlight reel, not their full story
- You don’t know their starting point, resources, or challenges
- You don’t know what they’ve had to overcome (or what they didn’t have to)

Meanwhile, you *do* know your own journey. You know where you started. You know what you’ve had to push through to get where you are.

So being “in the same room” as someone else might mean something completely different for you, and it might actually be a much bigger accomplishment than it looks.

A BETTER WAY TO MEASURE IS TO MEASURE PROGRESS
Instead of comparing yourself to others, compare:
- Where you were a few months ago
- Where you are now

That’s the only comparison that actually tells you something meaningful.

Progress is not always linear:
- Sometimes you grow quickly
- Sometimes it feels slow
- Sometimes it even feels like you’re going backward

That’s normal. What matters is long-term growth.

ACKNOWLEDGE YOUR WORK
Take a step back and recognize:
- How much effort you’ve put in
- What you’ve already accomplished
- How far you’ve come

Those things count.

YOU DESERVE TO BE IN THE ROOM
If you’ve made it into the room, you deserve to be there. That’s not luck. That’s not an accident. It means you’re capable. If you catch yourself thinking: “I don’t belong here” or “I’m behind” Pause and challenge that thought.

You are:
- Qualified
- Capable
- Still learning (just like everyone else)

STAY FOCUSED ON YOUR PATH
Other people may be ahead in some ways, but they’re also figuring things out in ways you don’t see.

Focus on:
- Building your skills
- Taking opportunities when they come
- Staying consistent over time

That’s what actually moves you forward.

FINAL THOUGHT
Feeling behind doesn’t mean you are behind, it just means you care. Keep going. Track your own progress. Be patient with yourself.

Just keep going, one foot in front of the other, and you’ll get where you want to go. You can do this!
