How do you balance personal growth while also growing in your career and school?

School and work are difficult enough on its own, how do you work on yourself too?

For me, it helped me to understand that working on myself also helped me in my school and work life. If possible, set aside some dedicated time for your self work - if you can, block it off on a calendar as an appointment, both so that others do not schedule things during that time, and to help hold yourself accountable to taking the time (it can be easy for that self-work time to be the first thing we give up when time gets tight). It also helps me to break the self-work into manageable pieces, so that it's not overwhelming or "one more thing to do". 10-15 minutes here or there can add up. Finally, make it as enjoyable as possible. Again, you don't want it to feel like a task or "to do" item. Find ways that you can incorporate the self-work in a fun or creative or interesting way.

Hi Morgan! I'm a huge advocate of personal growth. Here are some things I do to help balance my personal growth with my career and life:
• Wake up early. Ok so I do wake up ridiculously early for some people (4:30 am) but I encourage anyone to give themselves more time by waking up early. What do I do with this time? I get my workout in first thing in the morning because good personal health helps with good personal growth. Then after my workout/social time at the gym I multitask my getting ready for the day with an educational podcast, YouTube video, or Pimsleur Spanish lesson.
• Seek and volunteer for opportunities through work (or in your case school). I've been doing this since I was in school. I would always join extracurricular activities like clubs and sports and still do to this day. In addition, I try to do one in-person conference each year and always keep an eye out for accessible webinars. These are great opportunities to connect with other professionals, learn, and grow your career.
• Get your reading in. Whether a physical book or audible try to read as much as you can. I understand reading a physical book may require set time but a few minutes a day goes a long way. Maybe include it in your bedtime routine. If that's tough to fit in, audible is great for multitasking so whether your driving, walking, running errands, etc. you can fit that book in and continue your personal growth.
• Socialize. This can be fun and still aid you in your personal growth. What better way than to connect and learn from peers? I usually combine most of my daily social time with my morning workout as early morning gym crew tends to be working professionals and they have a lot of great advice.

One great tip that's always stuck with me is rephrase "I don't have time" to "It's not a priority." This will help you evaluate what you really want to prioritize in life and help you to create that balance you're seeking. Also keep in mind some things are in seasons and it may be tough to be 100% balanced all the time. Sometimes your career will demand more of your time and other times your family or other aspects of your life, so you need to keep an open-mind and sometimes be flexible about it too so you don't beat yourself up when life seems unbalanced. Good luck on your path to personal growth!

Great question! I love that you’re already thinking about how to balance your career and personal goals, something I personally struggled with early in my career journey. I initially dove headfirst into my professional growth and overlooked the importance of developing personally outside of my organization.

One of the best decisions I made was investing in a career coach. My coach helped me create a career map that included not only a professional succession plan but also a personal succession plan, which made a significant difference in how I approached my overall growth.

My final piece of advice is to create a plan and write it down. Whether you use a calendar, checklist, or another system that works for you, having a documented plan, and intentionally following up on it. This will help you stay aligned with both your personal and professional priorities.

Hi Morgan,

This is a great topic! Life can get busy and overwhelming, but staying organized and having a plan can help. Even though plans might change, a general outline lets you manage your time better. Be intentional about where you spend your time. If you know a busy week is ahead, block out time for activities that recharge you (that's yoga for me!).

That's a great question! While career and school matter, being the best version of yourself is just as important. Make personal growth a priority by setting clear goals, like picking up a new hobby or spending more time with loved ones. Write these goals down and add them to your calendar. It might seem odd at first, but scheduling time for yourself helps make sure you don't neglect what truly matters to you.
